The Community United Methodist Church in Half Moon Bay will echo with spirited and uplifting music on Friday evening, June 9, with an Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir Youth Choir benefit concert highlighting Coastside resident, choir member and songwriter Peter Bland. Thoughtful originals and upbeat gospel standards, both vocal and instrumental, will be performed in lively style by musicians from the Coastside to the East Bay. The evening will begin with original, ambient instrumental music performed by Coastsider Paul Godwin and continue with a roughly 15-member ensemble drawn from the 60-strong interfaith choir. The concert will also feature solos by OIGC Artistic Director Terence Kelly. Spotlighted in the concert will be folk/rock originals by 18-year Miramar resident Bland, backed by the OIGC Choir Eensemble and by the folk/rock/jazz sounds of the five-piece Jones Gang, which grew out of the Houston Jones band. Bland, familiar to Coastside audiences after having backed Irish troubadour Mo Robinson and as a member of the Living Room Set, translates his own observations and experiences into his songs about "people, places and things I've seen change over time." Having put himself through school, he salutes the youth choir scholarship opportunities that the benefit supports, and credits the OIGC itself for inspiring his "ongoing effort to give back what has been freely given to me ... (to) help them get started with their education." The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, at the Community United Methodist Church at 777 Miramontes St. in Half Moon Bay. Tickets are $20/advance and $25/at the door for adults, and $10/advance and $15/at the door for seniors 65 and above and youth 18 and under.
